Raising the visibility of breast cancer through breast cancer awareness days is incredibly important to us as a society. Breast cancer has shown itself to be a growing ailment in recent years, with the occurences of its diagnosis rising year after year. The key in coping with and effective treatment of breast cancer is in detecting it as early as possible, and this can most effectively be done with breast cancer awareness days across the country.
By raising of awareness of breast cancer, we can encourage people, primarily women, to be checked by their doctor more frequently, or at least as frequently as recommended. Why? Because it is a well known fact that many women go for years without an examination, and by the time some of them are diagnosed with breast cancer, the disease has had literally years to manifest itself. This type of situation is easily preventable by having breast cancer awareness days.
The importantance of early detection and an early diagnosis cannot be understated. In 2006, the American Cancer Society made an educated guess based on their data that there would be more than 210,000 new cases of breast cancer in the coming year, and more than 40,000 of them would die. Note that breast cancer is not limited to women, despite the common myth about that. Every year about 1600 men are diagnosed with breast cancer and about 400 of them die. How many of these lives could be saved with more awareness about the possibilities of breast cancer and the benefits of regular checkups with early detection of it?
Statistically, about 30% of breast cancer patients are women under the age of 40. Women with a family history of cancer or related concerns may want to schedule checkups more often than the annual exam recommended. Clinical breast exams should be done at least every three years starting no later than age 20, and at least once every year after age 40.
Unfortunately, there is no known prevention for breast cancer, so it is unique in that sense. But since that is the case, we must all depend on getting regular checkups so that early detection can be done. Just because there is no cancer in your family history does not make you immune from getting breast cancer.
A very sobering statistic is that you could be the one woman in eight who will develop breast cancer sometime in your life time. Give yourself the gift of life and keep your own breast cancer awareness levels high via regular checkups.
